I'm going to tell you about dog training. The first step, before I tell you how to train your dog, is being patient. If you're not patient with your dog, things could go wrong, and you won't be able to train your dog at all. I've trained my dog using hand signals. That way, I don't need to waste my voice. I also use clicker training. You can buy a clicker at the pet store, and basically what it is is a button you press down on when your dog does something good that makes a loud clicking noise. Then you give the dog a treat. You alternate with treats and praise, like "Good Dog!" or "You're such a good boy/girl!" That way, your pet associates the clicker with something good. Therefore, they do things that are, in our eyes, "good." Now, on to the first command. The first basic command we'll be learning is sit. Now, depending on how old your dog is, follow the instructions for your dog's age group.
6 weeks- 4 months
Since your dog is younger, to teach them the sit command, you lightly push down their hindquarters (no, hindquarters do not mean butt, they are the back legs) and say "sit", then give them a treat. Do that for 2 or 3 more times, than say "sit" without pushing their legs down. If they do it, then you give them a treat and a lot of praise. If not, continue working with them. Once they get it, every now and then, give them a sit command to refresh their memory. |
5 months and up
Hold your hand, palm up and your hand cupped, with a treat in it. Place your hand above the dog's nose. If they jump up and try to steal the treat, you say "no" and turn away from them. Keep standing there until they sit down, then give them the treat and some praise. |
